POM POM KNITTED HAT

PATTERN RATED: Beginner / Intermediate

Yarn Used: Baby Finger Weight Yarn
Colors Used: Gray & White

Equipment Used:  Size 7 circular knitting needle or straight needles.

Special Stitches

Knit 1. Purl 1. Across.
Next Row, Knit the purls, and purl the knit stitches.

Instructions

Work pattern back and forth on the needle. Pattern is worked in sections which consist of the
special stitches above and the stockinette stitch.
Cast on 84 stitches.
{Ribbed band for the hat begins now.}
Knit 1. Purl 1 across. Next row, knit 1, purl 1 across. Repeat this pattern until you reach about 2 inches. ( If you want a larger band, keep going another half inch or so.

*After band is at desired length, begin a section of  the special stitches listed above for about 2 1/2 inches. Which to the stockinette stitch and stitch for about another 2 1/2 inches. *

Repeat this pattern between the * until you have reached 10 inches in length including the band.

Now you will cut a very long tail to sew up the seam of the hat and to close the top of the hat.
To sew up the seam I used the mattress stitch which can be found HERE
Now...using the same long tail, weave the tail along the top of the stitches pulling as you go carefully so you won't break the yarn to close up the whole.
You will probably have to work a little with this part to get it closed. If you have to go around it twice to secure it that's fine. If it doesn't close all the way that's ok too, the pompom will hide the whole.
Set hat aside and make the pompom then attached to the top.
